In a place like Luxemburg English is an easy language to exchange information with many people from different European places. The advantage is that it is understood by everybody. The disadvantage is that the subset of the words used by the people staying in Luxemburg embraces only the least common denominator of concepts that are necessary for conversation and business processes. In a globalized Europe it could well be that concepts that are only known in certain regions and are responsible for our cultural identity will stay in these locations and will be lost for the rest of Europe, simply because people don’t know how to translate them into other languages. If cultural diversity consitutes European identity, for a truly European culture to emerge, Europeans need to learn and speak many European languages.
