In the recent months I had problems with my health from time to time. After the Avigliana meeting I went to a doctor to find out what’s wrong. Last week unfortunately I was told that I have a serious illness: multiple sclerosis.
That’s life… it can change so quickly. On the other hand – my medical diagnosis is just one bit of information. Even when my existence in physical space becomes exhausting, as long as my brain stays intact, I will hopefully be able to enjoy part of my life in the digital space.
The diagram shows that the body is part of the physical space. I think it’s getting time for me to concentrate on impressions and expressions.

I just discovered this interview in which Lucas Gonze explains how Webjay decentralizes taste.
This is exacly what we need to do. Decentralize taste by making obsolete the centralized mass media. After some initial feeling of emptiness consumers will rediscover their own taste and find likeminded individuals – in the streets or on the net.
Here is another noteworty quote by Dave Winer.
All this was envisioned by our common teacher, Tim Berners-Lee, who was willing to design a system built on links that can break. This is the key philosophy to decentralization, a lovely term brought to us by Lucas Gonze. Don’t wait for the chaos to end, embrace it, move on and do it again. The world will take care of itself.
Journeyman Pictures : short films : Code of the Camorra – interesting documentary about life in a system that tolerates organized crime.
In their latest draft on the “retention of data processed and stored in connection with publicly available electronic communications services or data on public communications networks for the purpose of investigation, detection and prosecution of crime and criminal offences including terrorism” the EU Council proposes (Article 3.2 (e) 3. c):
(Communication data to be retained… shall at least include the following data:) [...] The media access control (MAC) address or other machine identifier of the originator of the communication. [...] (Member States shall take appropriate measures for the purpose of the technical implementation)
In his paper The Limits of Traceability the computer scientist Richard Clayton explains why it is practically impossible to trace Internet Users using MAC addresses. His conclusion is that data retention legislation will not provide Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) with sufficient information to trace people.
Due to this fact sooner or later it will be considered an appropriate measure for the implementation of this law that European governments mandate the use of other machine identifiers of the originator of the communication. Technically this will be enabled by the specifications of the Trusted Computing Group. Service providers will have to make sure that every originator of communication (User) has a machine identifier (User ID) to use their services. As a consequence of “data retention” digital media users will have to give up their Traditional Right and Usage (TRU) to publish content anonymously.
The way we can communicate will be regulated by legislation and technology. I wonder whether this form of control will be acceptable for Europeans in the long term.
