Services
MetaMC allows music submitters to categorize their Music by the
use of keyword "tags" which can then be used for music searchers
to easily find music on certain topics such as "mood" (e.g. chill,
eat, love, dance, sport). Because of its support for
user-generated tags (metadata), MetaMC can be considered an
example for a folksonomy
applied to collections of musical tracks.
Access control
The website provides both private and public music storage. A user
uploading a piece of music can set privacy controls which
determine who can listen to the music. Privacy settings for each
track can be private, audible by friends/family or public. Privacy
settings can also be decided by adding tracks from a users pool to
a "group". If a group is private then all the members of that
group can listen to the music. If a group is public then
effectively the track becomes public also. A "contact list" is
provided which can be used to control music access to a specific
set of Users, in a way similar to that of LiveJournal.
Many of MetaMC's users allow their music to be listened by
anyone, forming a large collaborative database of categorized
musical works. By default, other users can leave comments
about any track they have permission to listen, and in some
cases can add to the list of tags associated with a track.
Licensing
MetaMC offers Users (Creators) the ability to release their
Music under certain common usage licenses. The licensing
options include the Creative Commons attribution-based and
other content-control licenses. As with "tags", the site
allows easy searching of only those tracks that fall under a
specific license.
